Hey there, fellow two-leggeds and four-leggeds! If you’re reading this, I hope you have a comfy spot on the couch and maybe a treat or two nearby. My name is Daisy now, and let me tell you, life has a way of wagging its tail when you least expect it!
I used to be an island stray, trying my best to stay invisible, dodging tough dogs, and looking for scraps. It’s a tough cycle out here on the island, mostly because there are just too many of us pups born on the streets due to rampant, uncontrolled breeding. But my story took a major turn for the better, and I'm here to tell you how we can make sure every dog gets a happy ending like mine.
The Plot Twist That Changed Everything
It was an ordinary Wednesday. I was hanging out on a new-to-me porch, trying to blend into the woodwork, when this lady—let’s call her Mom, because that’s who she became—walked up. Instead of shooing me away, she gave me a sweet smile and a delicious, non-rotten snack straight from the fridge!
Over the next few days, Mom kept feeding me. But instead of my ribs disappearing, something else happened: my body prepared for puppies. I was pregnant.
We rushed to the vet, and that's where we hit a major bump in the road. Because I had been a malnourished stray without proper medical care, my pregnancy took a dangerous turn. There were no heartbeats, and I became severely septic. The vet couldn't save my puppies, but thanks to emergency surgery, he saved me.

The Big Takeaway: My scary medical emergency—and the loss of my puppies—could have been completely prevented by a simple spay procedure before I ever ended up on that porch. Spaying and neutering doesn’t just prevent overpopulation; it keeps female dogs safe from life-threatening pregnancy complications.
From Invisibility Cloak to Couch Potato
Mom gently nursed me back to health and taught me how to be a pampered house dog. I took to it quite quickly—turns out, I’m a natural! I gladly shed my invisibility cloak (yes, I like Harry Potter movies, as long as I can watch them with Mom on the couch).
Now? I wake up to sunlight and family laughter. No more dumpster diving! I have a shiny bowl of my own filled twice a day, neighborhood walks, and humans who literally cheer when I run back to them. The old fear is entirely gone, replaced by pure trust, endless belly rubs, and a secret friendship with the neighbor's cat (if you tell anyone, I will deny it).
A Message from One Lucky Island Pup
I went from invisible to irreplaceable, but my story shouldn't be a rare miracle.
The crisis of stray and suffering island dogs is entirely preventable. When communities prioritize spay and neuter programs, we stop the cycle of overpopulation before it starts. It means fewer puppies born into hardship, healthier mama dogs, and fewer strays having to fight for survival.
If you are a human reading this, thank you. For every spay/neuter clinic you support, every adoption, and every donation, you are stopping stories like my past from happening, and creating more happy endings for my future.
Life is good. Life is waggable. And my tail hasn’t stopped since!
Forever grateful,
Daisy 🐾
P.S. If my story tugged at your heartstrings, please consider helping RTR with their mission with a donation of time or money! They are working hard to provide crucial spay and neuter services to help my many island cousins who are still waiting for their own wonderful transition.
