If you spent any time near the docks in French Harbour a few months ago, you might have caught a glimpse of Buster. He was the kind of dog that moved like a shadow—thin, skittish, with patchiness in his coat and eyes that were constantly searching for a dropped piece of baleada or a safe place to hide from the midday sun.

Buster wasn't aggressive; he was simply exhausted. Like many community dogs, his daily routine was a constant cycle of foraging for scraps, dodging traffic, and navigating conflicts with other stray dogs during mating season.

The Turning Point

When RTR Spay and Neuter set up our community clinic, a local shopkeeper who had been leaving food out for Buster decided it was time to help him for good. With gentle patience and a handful of chicken, she coaxed Buster into a crate and brought him into our intake team.

At the clinic, Buster received a full health evaluation and his neuter surgery from our visiting veterinary team. While he was recovering in our post-op area wrapped in a warm blanket, something shifted. For the first time in his life, Buster was surrounded by gentle hands, soft voices, and human care without any expectation.

A New Chapter

Neutering Buster didn't just prevent future litters of vulnerable puppies—it changed his life trajectory completely. Without the hormonal drive to wander miles across busy roads looking for mates, Buster stayed closer to home. Within weeks, his coat filled out into a soft, golden brown, and his cautious demeanor transformed into a soft tail-wag whenever locals walked by.

Today, Buster isn't a stray struggling in the shadows; he’s the unofficial mascot of the dock, fully vaccinated, healthy, neutered, and loved by the neighborhood.
