Living on a tropical island is a dream for many humans, but for our four-legged family members, the combination of ocean saltwater, humidity, sand fleas, and intense sun can take a toll on their skin and fur. Whether youâre caring for a cozy indoor companion, an energetic rescue dog who loves beach runs, or an island street dog you've adopted into your heart, maintaining healthy skin is vital to their overall wellness.
Here are four essential tips every pet parent on RoatĂĄn should know to keep their petâs coat healthy and itch-free all year round:
1. Rinse After Every Ocean Dip
Saltwater can be incredibly drying to a dog's sensitive skin. When seawater dries in their fur, salt crystals build up against the epidermis, causing irritation, dryness, and incessant scratching. You don't need a full bath with shampoo every time your pup hits West Bay or Sandy Bayâa simple rinse with fresh, cool water will wash away salt and sand particles before they cause an itch.
2. Protect Against Tropical Parasites
Warm, humid climates are paradise for fleas, ticks, and mites. In addition to discomfort, tick-borne diseases like Ehrlichiosis are common across the Caribbean. Staying proactive with monthly preventative medication (topical treatments or oral chews) is one of the single best steps you can take for your pet's health.
3. Watch Out for "Hot Spots"
A "hot spot" (acute moist dermatitis) is a localized area of skin inflammation and infection that can develop in a matter of hours in high humidity. They usually start when a pet licks or scratches a small itch repeatedly. Keep an eye out for red, moist patches on their skin, especially behind the ears, on the paws, or at the base of the tail. Keeping your dogâs fur thoroughly dried after baths or rainstorms helps prevent these damp environments where bacteria thrive.
4. Hydrate from the Inside Out
Healthy fur starts from within! Ensure your pet always has access to clean, fresh water. Adding a small dose of omega-3 fatty acids (like fish oil) to their food can also help support a shiny, resilient coat and reduce skin inflammation.
At RTR Spay and Neuter, we believe that animal wellness goes hand-in-hand with population control. Healthy, spayed and neutered pets live longer, happier lives. Have questions about our upcoming free clinics? Check out our events page to learn more!
