Light, friendly, practical — perfect for this time of year

The dry season is officially here, and if you’ve stepped outside lately, you’ve probably felt that familiar wave of heat roll across the island. While we humans can duck into the shade or grab a cold drink, our dogs rely on us to help them stay safe and comfortable during these hotter months.

Here are a few simple ways to keep your pup cool, happy, and healthy as temperatures climb.

💧 Hydration Is Everything

Dogs lose moisture quickly in hot, dry weather, so keeping fresh water available isn’t optional — it’s essential. If your dog spends time outdoors, make sure they have multiple water spots, since bowls can tip, evaporate, or get warm fast.

A little trick island dog owners love: Add a few ice cubes to their bowl for a refreshing treat.

🌴 Shade, Shade, Shade

Even the toughest island dogs need a break from the sun. If your pup likes to hang outside, make sure they have a shady spot that stays cool throughout the day — not just in the morning.

Palm trees, tarps, umbrellas, or even a simple raised bed can make a huge difference.

🐾 Hot Ground = Hot Paws

Sidewalks, sand, and even dirt paths heat up quickly this time of year. If the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Try walking early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is less intense.

🚫 Skip the Midday Adventures

Dogs don’t regulate heat the way we do. Running, biking, or long walks during peak heat can put them at risk of heat exhaustion — even if they seem excited to go.

Save the big adventures for cooler hours and keep midday outings short and gentle.

🐶 Watch for Signs of Overheating

Dry‑season heat can sneak up on dogs quickly. Keep an eye out for:

  • Excessive panting

  • Bright red gums

  • Sluggishness

  • Vomiting

  • Trouble standing or walking

If you notice any of these, move your dog to a cool place immediately and offer water. When in doubt, contact a vet.

🌊 A Little Water Play Goes a Long Way

A splash in the ocean, a kiddie pool, or even a quick hose‑down can help your dog cool off fast. Most island dogs love it — and honestly, it’s a great excuse for you to cool off too.

💛 A Cool Dog Is a Happy Dog

Roatán’s dry season is beautiful, but it’s also intense. With a little extra care, your dog can

enjoy the sunshine safely and comfortably all season long.

RTR Spay and Neuter believes at the end of the day, keeping our pets cool isn’t just about comfort — it’s about love. ❤️🐾
