Dogs taking a bath.
A clean puppy is a happy puppy.

Caring for your dog doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. With a little time and a few basic supplies, you can keep your furry friend clean, healthy, and happy—right from the comfort of your home. Here are some affordable at-home dog care tips for a healthy pup.

🛁 1. Bath Time with Gentle Shampoos

You don’t need fancy products to give your dog a good bath. In fact, a mild, unscented baby shampoo or an oatmeal-based pet shampoo works great for most dogs. These are gentle on their skin and easy to rinse out. Avoid using human shampoos that contain harsh chemicals, fragrances, or dyes, as they can irritate your dog’s skin.

Tips for an easy bath:

  • Use lukewarm water.

  • Gently massage the shampoo into their coat.

  • Avoid getting water in their ears and eyes.

  • Dry them well with a towel (or a hairdryer on the lowest setting if they tolerate it).

👂 2. Clean Ears, Healthy Dog

Another affordable at-home dog care tip for a healthy pup. Your dog’s ears can build up wax and collect dirt, especially if they have floppy ears. Keeping them clean helps prevent infections.

How to clean safely:

  • Use a soft cotton ball or pad.

  • Moisten it with a gentle, vet-approved ear cleaning solution or a bit of warm water.

  • Wipe only the visible parts of the ear—never insert anything deep into the ear canal.

If your dog’s ears smell bad, look red, or seem painful, check with your vet before cleaning.

🐕 3. Regular Brushing = Happy Coat

Brushing isn’t just for looks—it helps keep your dog’s coat healthy and reduces shedding. It also helps you spot any bumps, ticks, or skin issues early on.

Choose the right brush:

  • Short-haired dogs: Use a rubber curry brush or bristle brush.

  • Long-haired dogs: Use a slicker brush or metal comb to prevent tangles and mats.

Brush once or twice a week—or more often if your dog sheds a lot or loves rolling in the dirt!

✂️ 4. Trim Those Nails

Long nails can make walking uncomfortable for your dog and may lead to joint issues. You can safely trim them at home with a little practice.

How to do it:

  • Use a pet nail clipper or grinder (not human clippers).

  • Clip just the tip—avoid cutting into the pink area (called the quick), which can bleed.

  • If your dog has dark nails, trim slowly and in small amounts.

Pro tip: Have styptic powder (or even cornstarch) on hand in case of accidental bleeding.

💡 Final Thoughts

Caring for your dog at home isn’t just a way to save money—it’s a chance to bond and build trust. Most importantly, keeping up with these simple grooming routines can help prevent costly vet bills in the future.
