If you spend enough time between West Bay and West End, youāve probably seen her: a sleek, confident island dog with a short black-and-brown coat, bright white paws, a white chest, and a colorful collar that somehow makes her look even more self-assured.
Ā
Meet Deco ā RoatĆ”nās most independent, streetāsavvy, peopleāloving wanderer.

š¾Ā From Street Pup to Dive Shop Darling
Decoās story started on the streets, but her charm didnāt go unnoticed. A local dive shop took her in, made sure she was spayed, fully vaccinated, and cared for, like the amazing humans they are. For a while, she tried the āhouse petā life ā soft beds, regular meals, friendly humans.
Ā
But Deco? Sheās a free spirit.
Ā
And while she loved the people that took her in, she didnāt always get along with the other pets in the home. Deco made it clear in her own politeābutāfirm way:
āI need the open road.ā
So, back to the streets she went ā not abandoned mind you, but choosing the life that suits her best.
Ā
š Ā A Dog With Multiple Addresses
Ā
Deco has what we like to call a āflexible housing arrangement.ā
Ā
She has several safe places where she knows she can sleep, rest, or grab a meal. A porch in West Bay. A shaded spot in West End. A kitchen floor she occasionally claims as her own. A hammock she pretends she discovered. She rotates through them like a seasoned traveler with a curated list of favorite stays.
Ā
And every morning, she decides where she needs to be next ā guided by instinct, curiosity, and probably by the occasional whiff of fried chicken.
Ā
šĀ The CarāChasing Habit That Ages Us All
Ā
If youāve ever driven through West Bay especially and suddenly noticed Deco trotting behind your car like sheās joining a parade⦠youāre not alone.
She does this with her people friends ā the ones she recognizes, trusts, and adores.
Sheāll follow along for a bit, tail high, keeping pace like sheās escorting you to your destination. Until she finds another one of her friends in the process on the road and stops to play with them.
And yes, we all worry.
Every. Single. Time.
Ā
But Deco has survived storms, traffic, territorial cats, and the chaos of tourist season. Sheās clever, alert, and streetāsmart in a way only island dogs can be.
We remind ourselves to have faith in her instincts ā even when she gives us mini heart attacks.
Ā
šĀ Freedom First, But Never Alone
Ā
Deco loves her freedom more than anything. The open road. The ocean breeze. The ability to choose her own schedule, her own friends, her own adventures.
Ā
But she also knows sheās not alone. She knows where the safe porches, garages, and living rooms are. She knows who will feed her. She knows which humans will scratch her ears and which dogs will share the shade.
Ā
Deco has built her own community ā a network of people and pets who look out for her, cheer for her, and sometimes gently scold her when she trots a little too close to the road, or when she approaches a leashed dog that doesn't necessarily have the same enthusiasm for life.
Ā
šĀ The Heart of an Island Wanderer
Ā
Deco is more than a street dog. Sheās a symbol of the islandās spirit ā resilient, independent, joyful, and deeply connected to the people who love her.
She reminds us that home isnāt always one place.
Sometimes itās a whole stretch of coastline.
Sometimes itās a handful of porches, garages, and even living rooms at times.
Sometimes itās the friends you meet along the way.
And Deco?
Sheās doing just fine.
Ā
It's stories like this that we all live here on the island every single day. Even though Deco chose the street life, we all know she's safe from getting pregnant because someone cared enough for her and their community to do the kind and responsible thing. For that, we salute you. š«”ā¤ļøš¾
