Almost every dog will be injured sometime in his or her lifetime. This includes an open wound on their paw or torso. They might get hurt while playing out in the fields or even in just horse-playing around with other dogs.

RTR Spay and Neuter is committed to the community and their education on responsible pet ownership, that includes K9 First Aid wound care. So, here are some steps that you will need to do before taking your dog to the Vet so that the wound will not get infected.

  1. Use cotton wrap gauze to muzzle your dog lightly around his or her snout. When dogs are in pain some may become aggressive and tend to become defensive and bite.

  2. Check the wound and make sure that there is no debris sticking to it.

  3. Then wash out the wound thoroughly with either a saline solution or plain tap water and dry the wound with sterile gauze.

  4. Dab antibiotic cream onto the wound making sure you do not get hair into it.

  5. Add a sterile Non-stick Pad on to the wound.

  6. Wrap sterile gauze around holding the Non-Stick Pad in place. Making sure not to wrap too tight so that the circulation is cut off.

  7. Then wrap Vet wrap around the gauze which is self-adhesive. Again, make sure that it is not too tight. The dog shouldn’t try to pull it off. But if they do, try to cover the entire wound with a sock if it is on their leg / foot area, or a T-shirt if it is on their torso.

At this point you will want to call your veterinarian and get the dog into the Vets office ASAP.
